Plan ahead

The moment you leave the security of your accustomed environment you become a traveller. The success of your trip depends just as much on your ability to stay healthy as it does on the choice of accommodation and resort facilities. Therefore before you travel anywhere in the world check the health requirements of your destination carefully. Look at all the risks and plan the precautions you need to take before you go, and when you are away.

The risks and precautions will depend on various factors including the countries to be visited and indeed the parts of each country, the time of the year you are contemplating travel, how long you are going for and where you will be staying.  For example, camping or backpacking present different potential hazards to staying in a hotel.

Consult the clinic well in advance

Contact our travel clinic well in advance of your departure to obtain general advice and arrange for any immunizations that you might need.
Remember that some immunizations take a number of months to give full protection, and some forms of anti-malarial medication need to be started three weeks prior to departure.
Our Travel Clinic will provide you with a complete vaccination and health information service. You can have a personal consultation tailored to your specific requirements. Besides your actual travel requirements, you can be provided with a computer printout of the latest travel information regarding your destination.

Getting ready
A consultation with our travel health professional can provide information about the medical risks that you might encounter abroad. These risks will depend on the following factors:-

bulletDestination(s)
bulletPurpose of travel
bullet'Style' of travel
bulletUrban or rural areas
bulletUnderlying medical problems
bulletAge
bulletTime of year

The major topics that you need to consider are:-

bulletPre-travel immunisations
bulletMalaria - prevention and Self- treatment
bulletTravelers’ diarrhoea – prevention and self treatment
bulletFirst aid kits

Pre-travel Immunisations
The most frequently asked question in the travel clinics is ‘what jabs do I need?’. We will assess the risks to which you will be exposed and recommended the most appropriate forms of protection.

Malaria
This is a serious parasitic infection of the bloodstream. It is the most important infectious threat to travellers to the tropics.

Travellers' diarrhoea
Dehydration following fluid loss can be from sweating, diarrhoea and fever, and if left untreated, can kill. Travellers’ diarrhoea can affect one third of tourists.

First aid kits
We take it for granted that we will be able to find plasters and dressings for everyday minor injuries and if we can’t we just go to the pharmacy. This may not be as easy when you are travelling. A small first-aid kit offers the perfect solution and the contents can be tailored to particular needs.

Oxford Travel Clinic is located at the Manor Hospital, Oxford’s only independent hospital and a local medical centre. The travel clinic operates on an appointment basis, and you will need to answer a few questions about your holiday at the time of booking the appointment and complete a short questionnaire prior to your appointment.

You can discuss all your requirements with the specially trained travel professional, who will then organise a programme of vaccination for you and supply you with the relevant advice for the destinations you are visiting.
